Make Money and Learn to Invest in Brandable Domain Names for Free
You ever wished you could practice investing in domain names without any risk, but also make money if you did well? Well, this is the DNAcademy lesson you need to watch today.
Hey everyone! My name is Michael Cyger, and I’m the publisher of DNAcademy.com.
You can build a brandable portfolio, list your domain names at a leading marketplace, and get paid when a name sells – all without risking any of your own money. I’m going to show you how, but first I need to give you some background on brandable domain names.
Brandable domain names are catchy words or phrases that businesses use to build their online identity around.
There are three types of brandable names – invented, compound and blended:
- Invented brandables are made-up words that do not exist in the dictionary. Or at least they didn’t appear before the company was formed. Invented brandable names include Google and Zillow.
- Compound brandables are combinations of words that exist in the dictionary but are not exact-match keywords, and often include alliteration. Compound brandable names include Circuit City and QuickBooks.
- Blended brandables are contractions of two words, and are often shortened or misspellings of typical words. Blended brandable names include Instagram and Netflix.
Investors like brandable domain names for three main reasons:
- Good brandable domain names cost less to acquire than good generic, exact-match, acronym, numeric or alphanumeric domain names,
- There are still plenty of brandable domain names to be hand registered, if you understand business, branding and are creative enough to put words together, and
- They have the potential to generate a tremendous return on investment.
But buying good brandable domain names is hard because it takes time to master branding and naming skills.
Luckily, there’s a solution.
You can try your hand at brandable domain names and hone your skills BEFORE making a financial commitment or even risking a penny.
Here’s how in five easy steps:
- Create a Squadhelp.com Account
Go to Squadhelp.com and open a free account as a Creative.
- Submit an Unregistered Domain
Go to your Marketplace Listings and click on “Submit an Unregistered Domain” button. You’ll need 10 points for each unregistered name you submit, but you’ll get 1000 points just for signing up as a Creative, so you’ll have at least 100 tries at honing your naming skills.
You’ll need to write a brief description for the domain name. This is good practice and an extra assurance that the name is one that businesses want.
Before submitting, make sure to look at the description of a similar name at Squadhelp or at BrandBucket. Don’t copy the description exactly. Use it to get some ideas.
Squadhelp limits the number of unregistered domain names you can submit at a time. To start, you can submit two unregistered domains until Squadhelp gets back to you on whether or not the names are accepted. As your submissions get approved the limit will increase.
Submit the domains with the option “I am ok with both options (Squadhelp or myself)” under the “If approved, who will register the domain?” heading as it has the best chance of being accepted and they usually register the domain anyway. I also recommend you let Squadhelp choose the commission rate.
- Get Notified When Squadhelp Accepts
Squadhelp emails you to let you know when they’ve accepted a name for listing, usually within one to four business days of submission. Keep in mind that, on average, Squadhelp accepts less than 10% of submitted domain names.
Squadhelp will not email you if they reject the name, so keep checking your dashboard to see whether your domains are accepted or not. If accepted, Squadhelp will let you know what they will give you for a commission.
- Create a Squadhelp.com Account
As Squadhelp will own the domain, they will pay you a 25-30% commission if it sells. Basically, they are paying you a finder’s fee, but you accept no financial risk. Whereas if you had registered it, you would pay for the domain and renewals but keep about 70% of the sale price if it sells.
After you approve the commission rate, Squadhelp registers the domain name and creates a logo and landing page. And you get 100 points for each domain you list, so you can submit more names.
You have options on adjusting price, choosing categories, and selecting keywords for the listing.
- Set Your Account Details and Get Paid
You get exposure and build a portfolio at a leading brandable marketplace – all for free. And you get paid when a name sells without having spent any money and while learning and honing your skills at finding and creating brandable domain names that businesses want.
Don’t forget to set up your payout method in your Account Details. Squadhelp pays by PayPal and Payoneer.
- Consider Selling to Other Sellers at Wholesale
If you’re tired of waiting for an end user, to sell your domain name to – Squadhelp also has a Seller to Seller wholesale marketplace where you can sell your listed domain or the domain listing if Squadhelp owns it.
Domain listings of Squadhelp owned domains generally sell for $25 to $50 to other investors, with a $5 or 5% transaction fee going to Squadhelp. (Note: As of November 22, 2019, Squadhelp reduced their seller to seller marketplace commission from $5 or 5% of the transaction to a flat 2.9% of the sale price plus $0.30) To join the Seller to Seller marketplace you need a minimum of 10 approved and live Premium listings. You can also request to join the Seller marketplace with 3 active listings if you are a domainer. More information is available at Squadhelp.

Note: As of the date of this tutorial publication, DNAcademy Teaching Assistant Aline Carriere’s acceptance rate at Squadhelp is approximately 30%, or about one in every three domains she has submitted. Her advice to you: after a while, you will get a better idea of what types of domains Squadhelp accepts for listing and can decide whether to register a domain before submission or submit unregistered with the intent to register to get the better rate of 65-68% of the sale price or even whether to submit to another marketplace.
